Canada check

IG holds licences outside Canada but is not registered with CIRO or any provincial securities regulator. If it accepts you, your account will normally be opened with an offshore group entity rather than its better-regulated subsidiaries — so CIPF coverage, CIRO margin rules and OBSI complaint handling do not apply. IG does not open accounts for Canadian residents.

Our take on IG

IG is one of the oldest and largest CFD and spread-betting providers in the world. It holds top-tier licences in many countries, but Canada is not one of them and it does not open accounts for Canadian residents.

IG is one of the most complete CFD and spread-betting providers in the world, with its own platform, MT4, ProRealTime and TradingView. Its U.S. forex business operates as tastyfx. Canada is not among its markets. For Canadians, CMC Markets Canada offers the most similar experience — a large CFD range and advanced proprietary platform — under CIRO.

Verdict

Not available to Canadians. CMC Markets Canada is the closest like-for-like option under CIRO.

How IG scores

Canadian protection carries 40% of the weight, so an unregistered firm can't outrank a registered one on price alone. See the full methodology.

Verify IG yourself

  1. Look for the firm on CIRO's list of dealers it regulates.
  2. Search the legal entity name in the CSA National Registration Search and check it is registered in your province.
  3. Confirm CIPF membership in the CIPF member directory.
  4. Search the CSA investor alerts for the brand name and any look-alike websites.
  5. Make sure the account agreement you sign names the same legal entity — not an offshore affiliate.

IG: frequently asked questions

Is IG regulated in Canada?

No. IG is not registered with CIRO or any provincial or territorial securities regulator, although it holds licences elsewhere (United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Singapore, Japan). Canadian protections such as CIPF coverage and OBSI complaint handling do not apply.

Can Canadians open an account with IG?

No. At our last check IG did not accept Canadian residents. Using a VPN or false address to get around this breaches the broker's terms and can put your funds at risk.

Does IG offer MetaTrader?

Yes — IG supports MT4, and you can also trade from TradingView.
