Our take on Questrade

Questrade is Canada's best-known independent discount brokerage and, since dropping stock and ETF commissions, one of the cheapest places to invest in a TFSA, RRSP or FHSA. It is also one of the few Canadian firms that offers both long-term investing and leveraged trading: forex and CFDs run on the separate Questrade Global platform. Having everything under a Canadian-owned CIRO member is convenient — funding is straightforward from any Canadian bank, and support works on Canadian hours. FX/CFD spreads are not the tightest in the market, and Questrade Global doesn't support MetaTrader or TradingView trading.

Verdict

An excellent home base for Canadian investors. For dedicated forex traders, it's convenient rather than best-in-class on pricing or platforms.

What we like

  • +$0 stock and ETF commissions in registered and cash accounts
  • +Full range of Canadian registered accounts
  • +Forex and CFDs available from the same Canadian dealer
  • +Easy funding from Canadian banks

Watch out for

  • −FX/CFD spreads wider than specialist brokers
  • −No MT4/MT5 or TradingView trading for FX
  • −Separate platforms for investing and FX/CFDs

How Questrade scores

Canadian protection carries 40% of the weight, so an unregistered firm can't outrank a registered one on price alone. See the full methodology.
