What is a pip?

A pip ("percentage in point") is the standard unit for currency price moves. For most pairs it is the fourth decimal place — 0.0001. For yen pairs it's the second decimal place — 0.01. Many brokers quote an extra digit (a "pipette"), so USD/CAD might show 1.41683: the final 3 is a tenth of a pip.

Pip value formula

Pip value (in the quote currency) = units × pip size

For 10,000 units of EUR/USD: 10,000 × 0.0001 = US$1 per pip. To express that in Canadian dollars, convert at the USD/CAD rate: about C$1.42 per pip at a USD/CAD rate of 1.42.

For CAD-quoted pairs (USD/CAD, EUR/CAD, GBP/CAD, AUD/CAD) there's no conversion — 10,000 units is always exactly C$1 per pip. That's one reason many Canadians like trading CAD pairs: risk in your own currency is simpler to track.
