Our take on Binance

Binance is the world's largest crypto exchange by volume, but it left Canada in 2023 rather than meet the requirements for registered crypto trading platforms. Canadians should not use workarounds such as VPNs to access it — doing so breaches its terms and removes any practical recourse.

Binance's exit also affected Canadians who used Binance-linked services. If you still hold crypto on an unregistered exchange, moving it to a CSA-authorized platform or a self-custody wallet reduces your exposure to sudden withdrawal restrictions — a risk Canadians have faced repeatedly, from QuadrigaCX to FTX.

Verdict

Not available in Canada. Use a CSA-authorized platform such as Kraken, Coinbase or Bitbuy.

Verify Binance yourself

  1. Check the CSA list of authorized crypto trading platforms for the company operating Binance.
  2. Search the legal entity name in the CSA National Registration Search and check it is registered in your province.
  3. Search the CSA investor alerts for the brand name and any look-alike websites.
  4. Make sure the account agreement you sign names the same legal entity — not an offshore affiliate.

Binance: frequently asked questions

Is Binance regulated in Canada?

No. Binance is not registered with CIRO or any provincial or territorial securities regulator. Canadian protections such as CIPF coverage and OBSI complaint handling do not apply.

Can Canadians open an account with Binance?

No. At our last check Binance did not accept Canadian residents. Using a VPN or false address to get around this breaches the broker's terms and can put your funds at risk.
